This course is taught as a capstone experience - the last class in a business student's course of study. It is designed as a culminating experience, intended to synthesize students' business education and work experience. In this course we explore the very nature of business, competition, and sustainability; addressing fundamental questions, such as:
What is business? Why do business organizations exist?
How has business evolved over time, particularly in the past 150 years?
How has the increasingly dynamic nature of the marketplace changed the way companies do business?
Why do people transact and exchange?
What is firm performance and how can it be measured?
How does effectiveness differ from efficiency? Management from leadership? Competition from cooperation?
Why does one firm outperform other firms?
What determines the profit potential of a particular industry?
What is the nature of technology and how does technology impact business?
What is the nature of the free enterprise system and how does it impact the performance of individual firms?
How is the coordination of the functional areas of business related to strategic management and business policy?
What are the key success factors within specific industries and geographic regions?
What is the relative value of strategic planning content vs process?
What are the different paradigms of strategic management?
How has globalization influenced firm performance and strategic planning?
How does business ethics relate to business profit?
What are the emerging trends in business and strategic mgt around the world?
